WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Rescue crews were searching for nine people missing from a Japanese fishing school vessel after a U.S. submarine accidentally hit and sank the ship as the sub was surfacing.
A southwestern Japanese town was anxiously awaiting word of the fate of 13 of their children who were on board the fishing vessel.
A spokesman for the Coast Guard said two Navy helicopters, a Coast Guard helicopter, two Coast Guard patrol boats and several smaller rescue boats were helping in the search through the night.
Of the missing, four were students, two teachers and three crew members, public broadcaster NHK said, citing Foreign Ministry sources.
A Navy spokesperson at the Pentagon said as many as 26 people from the Japanese vessel were taken aboard the submarine.
The Japanese Coast Guard said 35 people had been on the ship, called the Ehime Maru.

It's criminal!!! by: u_ali 2/10/01 4:52 am Msg: 75 of 88The US Navy should be ashamed of its professional 'competence'. I find it ridiculous that a submarine's SONARs couldn't detect the presence of a vessel on the surface. No matter what, to say the least, it's 'criminal negligence'.
As a Naval officer, I know how important a SONAR operator's alertness is. And the incident shows that the submarine crew must have been habitual of surfacing/diving without proper precautions.
And it's even more shameful to see how the incident is being covered. The sub sunk a trawler and the initial reports were "Japan Trawler Hits U.S. Nuclear Submarine, 10 Missing ", as if the trawler sunk the sub!!! What would have been the media's reaction had some other country's submarine hit a US trawler?!?!?
In the end, I hope and pray that the missing people are rescued safely at the earliest.
